We are a student branch of Engineers Without Borders, an international development organization that removes barriers to development through engineering and is part of a global movement to engineer a better future. Since we established in 2014 we have been dedicated to tackling poverty and improving social mobility using engineering. We aim to provide opportunities for members of the Oxford community, including non-engineering students, to partake in research projects that tackle poverty using engineering. In the past, we have hosted a wide range of projects that allow for such development from building water infrastructure to medical software development.

We are hosting three projects that will run for this academic year and they touch upon:

  • sustainable cooling systems in buildings and using recycled materials to reduce moisture in buildings,
  • machine learning to create patterns for the old local artisans to use in their traditional techniques,
  • application of visual tracking algorithms for human-computer interfaces.

To give you an overview of the events we are also doing this year, we are running a series of:

Speaker events: Giles Cattermole, Director of Bboxx (investing in solar products in Asia and Africa) and Introba (funded the Low Energy Transformation Initiative for London) are coming to speak for our society.

Workshops: We are hosting a Medical Imagining and Biomedical Signal Analysis Workshop this term with a researcher from Oxford.

Socials: Formals for our members, gingerbread house competition for Oxmas, sustainable art class and many others.
