Research students are expected to submit their thesis within a particular timescale from starting their programme, then are given an extra 6 months for your viva exam and undertake any corrections as a result of this exam. The typical deadlines are:
- Full time DPhil: 12 terms (approx. 4 years)
- Full time MLitt or MSc (by Research): 9 terms (approx. 3 years)
- Part time DPhil: 24 terms (approx. 8 years)
Your exact maximum submission deadline can be confirmed by your Graduate Studies Assistant in your department. You should also be mindful that your funding body may require you to submit earlier.
In exceptional circumstances, you can apply for an extension of up to six terms (approx. 2 years) for DPhil students and up to three terms (approx. 1 year) for MLitt and MSc by Research students. Generally, the University will only approve these extensions one term at a time.
How do I apply for an extension?
Each department/faculty/division have their own process, so you should approach your supervisor, DGS or departmental administrator for how to do this. It is likely they will want to know:
- - Why you need the extension: have you had any particular barriers (either in conducting your research or in your personal life) which have led to this request?
- - What your plan is to complete the work with the additional time? (The University will want to be assured that you are likely to be able to complete the work in the additional time you are given)
- - If your situation which caused the need for extension is still ongoing, how you will mitigate its impact?
Is there anything I need to consider with my funding body?
It might also be that you need to apply for an extension from your funding body too, who will follow their own regulations. Unfortunately, Oxford SU Advice is unable to advise through these processes.
What can I do if my extension request is denied?
You have the option to challenge this decision via the Student Complaints Procedure
