An Update Regarding the Future of The Oxford Student

Oxford Students’ Union (SU) recognises the important role that student journalism plays in holding institutions to account and keeping the student body informed. We support responsible journalism and a fair student press.

It is with this in mind, that following a period of extensive consultation with our Board, and with the support of Oxford Student volunteers, we have taken the decision to support The Oxford Student to transition to become an independent publication.

This decision has not been made lightly, but we are confident it is the best course of action for both parties involved – empowering The Oxford Student to operate as a fully distinct and independent publication and ensuring the SU can continue delivering the greatest impact for the students we represent, while championing the role of a responsible and fair student press.

The SU will work closely alongside the Editors in Chief to ensure a responsible and smooth transition process. The SU also commits to continue providing financial support to The Oxford Student for the first year to aid their establishment as an independent publication.

The Oxford Student current editorial team stated they are “excited to take on the challenge of independent reporting and continue to provide a platform for the training of student journalists.”

The MT25 Editors-in-Chief of The Oxford Student, Canqi Li and Christina Scote, also commented: “We’re very excited to work with each other to help The Oxford Student thrive as an independent newspaper. We will do our very best to make sure that the paper continues to uphold high journalistic standards and that it sticks to the editorial values it has always emphasised.”
